GUNTERSVILLE LAKE

WATER TEMPERATURE: MID-70'S
Its known as a BIG BASS Lake. March and April proved that. Reports showed
many bass over 10 pounds were taken this spring. One weighing 13 pounds 2
ounces, was fooled by some fortunate angler, and released alive and well
during a major bass tournament. May is no exception when it comes to seeing
more Big Bass brought to the scales on massive Guntersville Lake. So how do
they catch these huge bass?
One fortunate angler in the Bassbum's Solo Trail Northern Division tournament
last month, simply put it. " I just threw up under a pier and the big bass
hit ." The results was the biggest bass weighed in the history of the
Bassbum
Solo Trail, weighing a little over 10 pounds (see www.bassbum .homestead.com)
Many
other bass exceeding 10 pounds were reported to be caught on a number of
lures, from shallow to deep water. Spinnerbaits fooled a lot of big bass last
month. Rattletraps always surprise an angler when attacked by a huge
largemouth over 10 pounds. Topwaters take their share of these huge bass too.
Buzzbaits, frogs, rats, floating worms, lizards and soft jerkbaits too.
Crankbaits, combined with either Texas-rigged or Carolina-rigged plastics in
and around deeper water, take their share of these deeper dwelling offshore
bass. So now you know what, but where? This is a big lake. Big bass are
fooled lakewide on main lake flats, points, piers, submerged humps and around
visible islands. Many major feeder creeks adorn this lake.
Browns Creek, Honeycomb Creek and Spring Creek on the lakes lower end are all
good, especially when searching for clear water. Town Creek, North and South
Sauty Creeks and other smaller creeks far upriver like Mink Creek and Mud
Creek, are all loaded with cover and fish of all species. Guntersville is
loaded with aquatic weeds. The milfoil and deeper growing hydrilla are homes
for bass from shallow water to water as deep as 20 feet.
May as hailed is "topwater month" and no where can it be more evident
than
when fishing Guntersville Lake. The first frog and rat craze got started here
and is still a good tactic for fooling these bass in and around the thick,
matted weeds. Floating worms, lizards, weedless spoons and many other lures
can be the ticket when targeting Guntersville Lake this month. But you got to
