LAKE MARTIN

Water Temperature Mid-70's
This lake on the lower Tallapoosa River System, located in mid-Alabama near
the town of Alexander City, has seen the test of time. It is now 75 years old
and its deteriorating wood cover is a sign of a very old impoundment. But, it
still produces quality catches of fiesty-fighting spotted bass, some nice
largemouth's in the 5-10 pound range and stripers in the 40 pound plus
category.
Past Bassmasters and Operation Bass tournament trails are just a few of the
major bass trails that have sampled the often gin clear waters of Lake
Martin, situated just below upper Tallapoosa River Reservoir, Lake Harris.
From the now famous, Wind Creek State Park to down river portains, the
further you go, the deeper you can see. This is typically spotted bass
country and fishing deeper water is the norm.
Small lures, fished on light line, in water from 5-30 feet is possible, year
round in these very clear main lake waters.
Although some largemouth's are caught in the mid-to-lower lake, wood cover
and much more stained water portions of the lake exist upriver, which is
noted as Lake Martin's Big Bass waters. Wood cover is still evident in these
lake headwaters with stumps, blowdowns, brushpiles and laying logs.
Rock bluffs, points, islands, feeder creeks, small pockets, cuts and flats,
are also an added attraction to the shallow water dwelling largemouth's,
spotted bass and an occasional striper, hybrid stripe or white bass. More
piers, boathouses, marinas and resident-planted brushpiles are downriver.
Lake Martin is now at full pool, after being down for over 10 feet all
winter. Bass are still bedding and the water temperature is in the mid 70's.
(Topwaters, spinnerbaits, crankbaits and rattletraps are good for covering
water fast. Carolina and Texas-rigged plastics are good in clear water
fishing 10-20 feet deep. Jerkbaits and small crankbaits are good lakewide
this month.)
