WATER TEMPERATURE: MID-70'S

Weiss
lake is back to full pool. This means running the lake is not as
hazardous as a few weeks ago when it was down 3-4 feet. It also means that
weeds will begin to appear this month and that bass are spawning in water
temperatures of the mid-70's. Some bass, have already spawned. We have not
had a lot of heavy rains lately so the lake is clear for this time of year,
but that could change.
On Weiss Lake the residents put out a lot of brushpiles during winter. If you
were there this past season you could see brush on main lake flats, points,
around islands and all around piers. Of course its all under water now except
for the small twigs still showing. Fishing around these brushpiles requires
you fan-cast the outer edges before moving in closer to penetrate the inner
brush. Fan-casting crankbaits, rattletraps and worms or jigs, will also help
you to find these now hidden brushpiles. When working the brush, fish all
around the cover and even drop your lure down in the brush even allowing it
to soak a while.
Fishing dam or bridge rip-rap will discover a lot of bass relating to these
man made rocks as many come off the beds, bunch up, and start cruising in
packs, looking for an easy meal. Crankbaits, worms, lizards, rattletraps,
jerkbaits and other lures are good for bass suspending or on bottom.
Topwaters and spinnerbaits fished shallow early or late in the day are also
good for that shallow bite around these rocks.
As new green weeds begin to grow bass will move right in. I've seen bass very
shallow in May in past years and many spend time recuperating in very shallow
water, not suspended offshore. Fish points or any irregular section in these
weeds. Also look for bass around any wood or rock cover within these new
weeds. During hot sunny days bass will hug the shade in and around these
weeds. Lures for top to bottom will fool these anxious feeding bass during
May, "topwater month" on Weiss Lake.
