FORTY BOATS BRAVED THE HEAT ON ALABAMA’S LAY LAKE THIS PAST SATURDAY, JULY 7
WITH “BIG LARGEMOUTH BASS” DOMINATING MOST OF THE BIG SACKS OF BASS BROUGHT IN!
FIRST AND SECOND PLACE BRING IN OVER 19 POUNDS!
Some anglers say the fishing was tough. While others bragged on the number of bites they got this past Saturday, July 7 as 40 boats all came together to attempt to win the $2000 first place purse up for grabs in Airport Marine’s E Z Open Bass Tournament Trail for 2012. After interviewing several anglers with some nice 5 bass limits (many weighing over 15 pounds, a good day anytime on Lay in the hot summer season!) I discovered the shallow water bite was on.
Topwater lures like frogs, buzz baits, Sammies and Zara Spooks fooled some very nice bass, some weighing in the 4- 6 pound range!
* First Place - The winning team of Bryan Hughes and Eric Vining took first place with 5 bass weighing 19.90 pounds! They even admitted to some topwater bites and a few good bass caught while swimming a jig combo! In some very shallow water of 87 degrees!
* Second Place - Almost winning with second place (less than one half pound out of first place) was the father and son team of Mike Deangelo and Mike Sr. Deangelo with 5 bass weighing 19.38 pounds!
The conditions were much better (at the mid 80′s) than last week (past the 100 degree mark) but the water temperature had not changed much. Last week we saw water temps close to 90 degrees. Today it was in the mid-to-upper 80′s and the skies were cloudy with a little rain at dawn. Perfect conditions for a good topwater bite!
Airport Marine’s next tournament on this trail (and their last tournament on this E Z open trail for 2012) will be out of Paradise Point Marina on Saturday, August 4 2012. $100 entry fee!
* NOTE - Fish this one on Lay lake August 4 and you can go to the Classic September 8 (Lake to be announced) of 2012!
