This spring season during the year 2013, they were late.
Severe overnight cold fronts hampered north Alabama during the mid-March to late March period. I know I was there. So were many of my fishing friends, most of which reported poor bass fishing, while they were constantly searching Guntersville lake’s many miles of shallow, weedy waters. While trying to just stay warm!
Oh, we caught bass, despite the terrible cold and windy conditions, but nothing like the last two early spring seasons on Guntersville lake! When we saw 11 and 12 pounders during this mid to late March period in both 2012 and 2011.
Many times, both the avid bass angler and the largemouth bass they pursued were fooled by incoming warming trends. Some of both male and big female largemouth bass were even duped into invading and cruising the lakes shallows in pairs, as daytime air temps soared into the low 70′s, with overnight lows not even dropping below the mid-50′s.
This is always the first sign of spawning bass.
A first full moon of the 2013 spring season, took place on March 27. With constantly warming days and nights this will traditionally send the first wave of big, prespawn bass into the lake’s shallows. Just like it did last year (we saw an 11 pounder, caught on March 15) and the year before (I netted a 12 pounder caught on March 21 of 2011).
But not this year.
This especially held true until about April first. Then things changed for the better.
During this traditionally, “pre spawn springtime largemouth bass movement”, the lake’s weedy shallows are normally loaded with both smaller male bass and many big, female bass (some weighing in the teens!) and they are all here for one thing.
To spawn and reproduce another year’s offspring. 
But, suddenly it got cold, real cold! Nighttime lows dropped to 25 degrees with the daytime highs was not even reaching 50 degrees! What gives? This is supposed to be spring time!
During that last Wednesday of March (a full moon on the 27th), Guntersville lake’s expectant anglers saw water temperatures suddenly plunge from a very hopeful 62 degrees all the way down to 43 degrees.
So, the spawn was off and so was the “big bass bite.”
That is, until we fooled some very nice largemouth bass on Monday, April Fools Day. Only the beginning of bigger things to come…and as usual much bigger bass, including one ten pounder!

For the weekend of April 6 & 7th. Clearing lake waters from recent rain, with water temperatures in the mid-to upper 60′s, with partly cloudy skies and daytime highs near 80 degrees! Partly cloudy all week with nighttime lows near 50 degrees. Rain and thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday, daytime highs in the low to mid 70′s all week!

So, for now, here it is going into the second week of April and after five very successful guided fishing trips to Guntersville lake (some taken with a parent and child fishing trip during spring break!) I’ve seen many 3, 4 , 5 and 6 pounders all come into my new 2013 Ranger 521 Comanche Z model bass boat, by both children and their parents!
And as you can see from the smiles on their faces they were very happy with the days catch. So far (besides the numerous smaller 3-6 pounders), this past week we have seen a couple of 7 pounders, one 8 pounder, two weighing 9 pounds and yes, a ten pounder. Some days 20-30 bass.
Many of these big bass were taken on topwater lures with exciting and very memorable “big bass blows ups” these anglers will never forget. Some of the younger anglers even took home a big bass they wanted to get mounted!
Including one nice young man with a 7 pounder (his biggest bass ever) a trophy bass he will proudly display on his wall for the rest of all his bassin’ years to come! Knowing he caught that big bass all by himself on a zara spook topwater lure! The day him and his dad went fishing on Guntersville lake with Reed Montgomery, of Reeds Guide Service.
