Ricky Dale Smith and his wife won the Airport Marine Tournament held out of Lakeside
boat launch (with 2 other tournaments) last Saturday, April 9 2011 with 5 bass
weighing a little over 16 pounds. I filmed the tournament and interviewed the
winners. You can see how they reveal the way they won this tournament (and this

(Topwater lures fooled most of their bass on that partly cloudy day with morning air
temps at 70 degrees!)
It was a very tough day of fishing for most anglers, some of Alabama’s best.
Practice sessions for both me and my partner Terry Davidson showed us that finding
clear water was the ticket to getting multiple bites just about all day! We had
close to 25 bass.
What was really the best part of our day was when I caught a 5.52 pound largemouth
bass on a zara spook in one foot of water around 10 a.m.! Right after that, my
partner Terry caught another one weighing about 3 1/2 pounds — our two best bass of
our 5 bass sack that weighed 15.17 pounds — getting us 4th place overall! So the
$1100 payday (counting $510 big bass) helped as well!
The main lake was heavily stained, so were most creeks and the mid-to-upper lake
above I-20. So getting off the main lake, fishing in small clear water pockets, was
what it took for us to even get a bite. Some anglers reported no fish at all, so we
were fortunate to even get a good 5 bass limit.
Also, with 5 tournaments held on the lake (3 out of Lakeside launch, one out of
Riverside boat launch and another out of Poorhouse Branch Marina), it was very
crowded about every where we fished. I estimated at least 300 boats were in these 5
tournaments! But, the one big bass I caught and the biggest bass Terry caught, both
came on a heavily fished bank that 2 other boats containing 4 anglers, had just
fished real hard!
